We look a lot of websites at Meaningful Marketing. From doing search engine optimization audits or prospecting for clients, we’ve seen many websites over the last five years.
Because of this we feel we can confidently list the best website designers and companies in Victoria BC. These companies have caught our eye because the websites they create are beautiful, functional and responsive.
What About Us?
We also offer website design and invite you to learn more about our affordable website design. By no means are we the best in Victoria but we feel we create some really good mobile friendly websites that load fast and are much cheaper compared to other companies in the city, including the ones listed below.
Why? No overhead.
The companies we are going to list all do great work. But they also have lots of overhead which in turn gets passed onto you, the client. So if you are looking for a website design that’s easy on your pockets, we’re a great option. With the extra savings, you could also afford to do SEO for your new website.

I was talking to a friend last year about what we do at Meaningful Marketing. She told me her boss got a new website. As I always do, I checked out to see if it was responsive.
It was and it was damn sexy. It was designed by Doug Harrington of Harrington Creative. Some of our favourite websites from Doug are:

Last week we finished up work making the Victoria Transmission and Auto Care website responsive.
Responsive web design knows and displays your website according to what device the visitor is viewing it from.
It’s much, much different from mobile web design. Mobile websites are scaled down versions of your website and look nothing like your desktop site.
Responsive sites look the same as your desktop site except they display itself accordingly to what device the website visitor is viewing from.

Things were fine on laptops, desktops and ok tablets. The big issue was on smartphones. We needed to improve the experience of those visitors on the smartphones.
And we did:
Looks much better as everything is scaled to smartphone devices.
Especially important is that we have web forms for online booking on each service page. Before making the site responsive, the forms would never resize themselves on the smartphone. It was painful to fill them out and we hardly get any bookings from smartphone visitors. This is because the website didn’t know what device the person was browsing from.
Now it does and the web forms are easy to fill out.

As technology evolves so do our expectations.
Especially when it comes to mobile and tablet browsing. There is no reason in 2013 to have a website that is not mobile or tablet friendly.
What do I mean by friendly though?
I define “friendly” as the ability to browse a website no matter what device and not have to zoom in. Your website knows which device the visitor is using (desktop, laptop, tablet or smart phone) so it can display the website and it’s sizing to fit the dimensions of that device.
Here’s what the dimensions of each device looks like.
Customer Experience
Most websites will display on tablets and smart phones.
But the problem is they show the full website. So the fonts will be smaller and zooming is required. It doesn’t size down the website based on what device the visitor is using.
To combat this mobile websites were introduced a few years ago. They were a good alternative as they loaded faster since they were a scaled down version on the desktop/main website. These mobile websites were thought to be great in the early days of mobile browsing. It was deemed that anybody visiting a website from a mobile phone was on the road and only looking for contact information or brief idea of what the business does.
But more and more people are using their mobile devices and tablets to browse the web. And remember what I said about expectations? They want to see your full website not scaled down mobile website with limited information.
So how can you give your visitors a full browsing experience no matter what device they’re on? Responsive web design is how.
