The Most Overlooked Benefit of Twitter

How you can eavesdrop your way to more sales

How you can eavesdrop your way to more sales

Last week I broke out of my comfort zone and went to a networking event.

Normally I hate these things. Most of time I find people aren’t really concerned about you and simply want your business card so they can add you to their email list.

But this event I met a couple of interesting people from different industries. One of which was a local realtor named Scott Garman. He and his brother run Garman Group.

Scott made the jump from Vancouver to Victoria to start his real estate career. He had been away from Victoria for close to 15 years. He couldn’t rely on his old network of people since he lost contact with many of them.

What was he to do? He turned to Twitter.

His start in real estate happened around the same time Twitter started. He found the community of Victoria users to be very close at the time. They were lots of meet ups offline which helped really grow connections.

Since Twitter was new, there weren’t many other realtors on Twitter. Jumping into something new with little competition is a great way to grow.

But it was the most overlooked benefit of Twitter that helped him more than anything. One of the few marketers I look up to Gary Vaynerchuck also credits this benefit as the main reason his family wine store’s sales grew to record numbers.

Eavesdropping

I’m a notorious eavesdropper. Especially when the conversations involve business.

Well the advanced search function is a way you can eavesdrop on peoples Twitter conversations.

Advanced Twitter Search

Advanced Twitter Search

Unlike Facebook you can zone on what people are saying about your industry, products, services and competitors. This is a great way to get involved in the conversations. Doing so allows you to become the local go to source in your industry since most people are asking questions on Twitter. You’ll also be able to spot out potential business opportunities as well.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Develop a list of keywords related to your industry, product, service or competitors
  2. Head of Twitter Advanced Search 3 times a week
  3. Type one of your keywords into the “all of these words” form
  4. Add the city you’re located into the “near this place” form at the bottom

From there you will get a list of Tweets over the course of the last few days from people who have mentioned your keyword within your targeted area.

Scott mentioned his list of keywords included:

  • realtor
  • house for sale
  • home
  • moving

I may have made a couple of those up but you see where I’m headed.

Gary Vaynerchuk being in the wine industry obviously had a larger pool of keywords. He could choose all the brands and grapes he wanted. He could also simply search the term wine and join in on people’s conversations. And that’s why his business and personal brand grew.

Do you see beneficial this could be for your business? Instead of spending a hours every month Tweeting and finding content to Tweet, you can do this and see a better return on your time.

How to Increase Client Retention

Word Of Mouth

Word Of Mouth

I like to think the majority of my blog posts are quite in depth.

Today’s post is going to be short and simple.

Last month I purchased a 2012 Nissan Altima and of course I needed new insurance.

Most dealerships have the insurance porition contracted out to a local company. The Nissan dealership and insurance company I dealt with were no different.

Except one major service. Instead of having someone sit around waiting for cars to sale, Maxxam Insurance takes their business mobile. So when a car is sold the salesman will call one of the many Maxxam representaives and they’ll drive to the dealership.

This obviously increases their sales effiicency. But they also increase their client retention and word of mouth. Let me explain how.

Telemarketing Can Work

Fast forward to last week. I get a call from one of the Maxxam reps telling me my insurance is up. This is a nice touch because a few years ago, I actually drove around without insurance for a week!

ICBC sends a reminder notice but why can’t the insurance company I dealt with make a phone call as well? Follow up phone calls can provide a unique personalized touch after the sale. But what about the case of an expiring service?

This is something we agreed would work better when dealing with the customer service over at Victoria Transmission and Auto Care. Before our follow up and reminders were sent out by a company using automate post cards and emails. In the end we felt the phone call had more impact and was far more personal.

The reminder about my expiring insurance is the vital piece of information they need to make the next step. And that’s to retain me as a client.

But it’s the simple way they make that happen which helps increase word of mouth and their sales. Since they have mobile agents all over, they drive anywhere to meet you.

They’ll even make any changes to your insurance before you get there. It’s a painless transaction. So instead of having to drive to an insruance agent and deal with lineups, Maxxam drives to you.

The Meaningful Marketing Way

Why do I know this increases word of mouth? Because I hardly ever talk about businesses but I’m going to blog and post on Facebook about my positive experience with Maxxam. It’s the Meaningful Marketing way.

They’ve out cared their competition by;

  1. Reminding me my insurance was up
  2. Working around my schedule and meeting me my place of work

Really simple!

So my question to you is, what can you be doing better from a customer service standpoint that makes people talk about your business in a positive light?

Here’s another brief example from Jam Cafe in Victoria. Often busy, Jam provides coffee to patrons waiting for tables outside. A great touch that many don’t forget and mention when they talk about their experience there.

My mother mentioned this right away when we got there. And in a conversation with a friend a couple weeks ago, she mentioned right away the fact that they served coffee to her and her friend waiting outside.

PS. Do you see how being remarkable is one of 10 ways you can create a backlink to your site? I just gave Maxxam Insurance, Victoria Transmission and Jam Cafe backlinks for simply being awesome and caring.

Mark Cuban is a Newsjacker

Mark Cuban is a genuis

Last Sunday Baylor Universities Women’s Basketball team lost in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Baylor Star Brittney Griner played her last college game ever.

This was small news story since the Men’s tournament steals all the press.

Big deal right. What does this have to do with marketing? Quite a bit actually.

You see, Dallas Mavericks owner, Shark Tank “Shark” and all around awesome guy Mark Cuban says he would consider drafting Griner in this June’s NBA draft.

This has caused the media outlets and fans everywhere to talk about Cuban, the Mavericks and the possibility of Brittney playing in the NBA.

It’s brilliant really. You see, Cuban most likely isn’t going to draft her. But he’s taken a very small news story and blown it up.

It’s great for Brittney, Mark, the Dallas Mavericks, the NBA and the WNBA where she’ll end up playing professionally.

What Mark Cuban did here was jack the news. He took a small story and made it HUGE! Because of that he’s created a bunch of free media impressions for his team and himself.

This is known a newsjacking.

The Other Way to Rank High In Google

There's always another way

There’s always another way

There’s always another way.

Getting more sales. Driving to work. Playing a sport. There’s always another way to accomplish something.

And there is another way to rank high in Google outside of search engine optimization.

You see, last week I wrote a post on how to rank high in Google. But that was shortsighted. Depending on what business or industry you’re in, there might be another way to have your website and business rank high.

Start by Googling your business. But don’t Google your business name. Instead, pretend you’re a new customer searching for one, or all of your products and services.

Do you see search results that look like this?

How to Rank at the top of Google + Local

How to Rank at the Top of Google

Google search rankings

How to rank here

It’s been months since my last post.

For my email subscribers, you probably don’t even remember me.

During this time I’ve had clarity. Originally I was going to blog about Meaningful Marketing ideas. And for the first few months I did.

But recently I’ve decided that I should focus on local internet marketing. After all that is the skill I have the most knowledge in.

What Can you Expect?

These are the topics I plan to discuss:

  • Local Search Engine Optimization
  • Google + Local (formerly known as Google Places business)
  • Yelp
  • Google Adwords
  • Lead Generation
  • Website Design
  • Website Copy
  • Content Creation (blogging for business)
  • Social Media (Facebook/Twitter/Google +)
  • Google Anlaytics & Webmaster Tools

And from time to time I will talk about meaningful marketing and integrating your offline and online marketing.

How to Rank at the Top of Google

Since content creation and blogging for business is important, I do want to blog more. But I don’t want my posts to be fluff.

Here are the best of the best marketing articles for you

I’ve found some good articles for you from this past week. The common themes are:

  • content marketing
  • adding value
  • using both the above to stand out

Offering value through content marketing and then spreading that content on your social networks is the only way to stand out.

People’s news feeds and Twitter streams are crowded. You have to do something valuable for them to care about you and click on your articles.

I’ve also put a good article on why having too many sales isn’t a great way to build loyal customers and increase your profits.

Enjoy!

Be cautious of having too many sales

Say thank you to your customers but don’t have a hidden agenda

If you’re not going to create content, should you at least share relevant content from others?

Are you guilty of any of these mistakes?

The future of social media is offering value to stand out

Say hello to page one!

Search Engine Optimization can be down right intimidating.

I feel your pain. Three years ago I knew nothing of SEO.

That was until a friend suggested I talk to him for an hour on SEO. At the time I was working for a golf holiday company and I felt that we could attract website visitors through search terms like “Scotland Golf Holiday”.

For a few reasons I wasn’t able to help my employer out. But it was still beneficial to learn SEO.

And now I’m helping you learn SEO in three components.

  1. Keyword research
  2. Website Optimization
  3. Backlinks

Click on the first two links for previous posts where I show you how to do proper keyword research and then properly optimize your website.

Today’s post will discuss how to get backlinks to your site. Backlinks are simply links from other websites pointing towards yours. They help notify Google that your website exists. The more valuable backlinks you have, the better your Google PageRank. I explain why PageRank is important to your overall search engine rankings in the video below.

Essentially backlinks are the HGH of SEO. In this case they improve your search rankings and not your bicep size!

Without all three components your rankings will not improve. As I said backlinks are the only Google knows your wesbite exists. You could nail the first two components to SEO but if you have no backlinks pointing to your website, your rankings won’t improve.

Continue reading this post for a video showing you how to acquire high quality backlinks.

Give Birth To Your Brands Personality Today!

Is your brand worthy of a dinner date?

Brands are supposed to be things, not people right?

Wrong.

You see, all brands were the creative idea of a person. A real human.

So what about your brand?

Does it have a heart? A voice? A personality?

Is it faceless?

Here’s where I am going with this.

Lee Clow who is regarded as one of the top Advertising Creative Directors ever explains brand personality for you:

“Brands are very much like people. Do you think that brand is interesting? Would you like to have them over for dinner? Are they always the same or are they sometimes funny and sometimes serious?”

These were his words in the great documentary Art & Copy‘.

To sum it up, your brand is person. And it should start communicating like one.

If it speaks directly to your target market, even better.

Read on for two great examples of brands doing just that and how you can give birth to your brand.

Before you do that, tweet this link out for me if agree with what Lee and I have said so far.

How to make people feel like this when they see your brand? Read on.

First impressions are important.

We form opinions of people instantly.

But what about brands?

When you see a brand for the first time, you ask questions.

“Do I like this brand? What do they do? Why should I care about them? Do I trust them?”

The answers to these questions form your opinion.

When people first see your brand/logo/business name, they’re forming an opinion. This is also the case for those who know about your business but haven’t actually done business with you.

What can you do to influence people’s opinion of your brand? Read this post of course! [click to continue…]

Put An End To Your Businesses’ Interruptive Advertising

Touch people where it matters most when marketing

Advertisements are everywhere.

On the TV. On the radio. In a newspaper or magazine. Even in the bathroom.

Yep, we can’t even escape advertisements when we go to the bathroom.

This cleaver company decided people want to be advertised to when they’re going to the bathroom!

Resorting to this reeks of desperation. In fact I can’t think of a worse way to advertise. People are wiping their butts with your ads. Talk about hitting an all time low.

Would you really want your brand to be aligned with toilet paper and crap?

I can imagine the thought process went something like this:

“We’ve tried everything else to get people’s attention but nothing’s working. Eureka! Let’s create some advertisements that are going to be smeared in crap and flushed down the toilet!”

Brilliant.

To convert people in new customers and regular customers into evangelists, you have to hit it where it matters most. The heart…not the ass.

Read on to discover what it takes to emotionally connect with people. [click to continue…]

Increase your Facebook engagement

Engagement on your Facebook page is important.

The main feature of Facebook is being able to direct connect with people.

It can also give you provide feedback and let you know why people like your business.

My last post on how to improve Facebook engagement was the practical way to do so. I discuss why researching your previous updates is the best way to see what’s worked and not worked.

If you’ve tried that and are still getting little engagement, you’ll agree that things need to be switched up.

We want your EdgeRank score as high as possible for every status update. To make that happen your updates need shares, likes and comments. That’s how Facebook determines what shows up in peoples news feeds.

Here are a few different things you can use to increase engagement.

You might think they’re silly and have nothing to do with your business and sales. They don’t and that’s the point. You’re reading this because you need to change your posting strategy.

These ideas are about increasing conversation and engagement. When online you should have a networking and conversation mindset. When you network you talk about anything.

I’ll explain the hidden agenda behind these ideas at the end and why focusing on creating conversations will help get the rest of your updates seen.

Read on to learn what it takes to engagement like this

It’s frustrating not getting any comments, likes or shares.

You post an insightful link and tumbleweeds blow by. You let everyone know about a new product or sale you’re having and you hear nothing but crickets.

No matter what you post there’s very little in the way of comments or engagement. You might think this will change when you get more likes. Well I’ve already talked about how the need for social proof and more likes can really hurt your updates from getting seen.

Instead focus on increasing engagement with your current followers. This will give your updates a better opportunity to be seen by the fans you do have. Getting more engagement drives your Facebook EdgeRank score up and allows your updates to be seen more often in peoples news feeds.

So how can you generate more engagement on Facebook?

Read on and I’ll explain a practical way to do just that. [click to continue…]

Why Your Facebook Updates Are Not Getting Seen

Social Proof says we'll blindly follow others

Cats are everywhere on Facebook.

My news feed is usually littered with anything to do with cats, those formulaic “What most people think” meme’s, or “Sh** ____ says” videos.

But have you ever wondered why?

Read on as this post will explain how Facebook decides what updates are displayed in peoples news feeds.

In my last post I wrote about mobile applications in the business world.

I showcased a real life example of Bluebird Taxi who wants to stand out from their competition and focus on customer acquisition and retention.

It’s truly a great example of what meaningful marketing in the mobile world looks like.

Since that post was long I wanted to carry it over. For this post I’m going to talk even further about ways they could really increase their customer retention and acquisition.

In this example I’ll be showcasing another car service company already doing these things.
